Sci Pubs are regular science pop ups hosted by SSI where folks get to learn about different science topics while enjoying a nice cold beverage. Regional scientists give a 45 minute lecture about their area of expertise, typically a regional science topic. The audience gets an opportunity to ask their related burning science questions and get an in depth look into a wide variety of subjects. Previous Sci Pub topics include: Wolves in California, Sierra Nevada Rock Art, Community Advocacy of the Bear River, and Fire Ecology (to name a few!).
Join us Tuesday, October 20th from 6pm-7pm to learn all about bats from wildlife biologist Roy Bridgman and educator Farrah Masoumi from the US Forest Service. Did you know the free tailed bat can travel up to 100 mph? Neither did we! Learn all this and more at Sci Pub!
Roy Bridgman is a Wildlife Biologist on the Tahoe National Forest with over 30 years of experience conducting wildlife and habitat surveys, designing projects, analyzing effects to wildlife, and supervising seasonal survey crews. He has surveyed for bats, documented and protected bat roost locations, helped design and implement bat habitat protection projects, and assisted with mist-netting and monitoring bats.
Farrah Masoumi is the Conservation Education Program Manager on the Tahoe National Forest and spends most of her time presenting at campground programs, tabling at various community events, and visiting classrooms to teach students about the forest, including bats. Farrah was last year’s National Interpreter and Conservation Educator of the Year for the US Forest Service.
SSI is introducing a new series called Science & Sip which is a little less formal than Sci Pub, these events focus on casual science conversations with more audience participation. We bring a science specialist and an SSI employee who asks questions and engages the audience through interactive science discussion. These conversations do not require any special equipment and focus on audience driven participation.
