Sierra Streams Institute (SSI) is excited to announce we have begun work, in partnership with the Yuba
Watershed Institute (YWI), on the Little Deer Creek Landscape Resilience Project. This Sierra Nevada
Conservancy-funded project is located on 260 acres of public and private land in the Little Deer Creek
watershed about 0.5 miles southeast of Nevada City on the Northern Flanks of Banner Mountain.
Project work will take place on public lands managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM)
and nearby private lands held under conservation easement or fee title by the Bear Yuba Land Trust
(BYLT). The purpose of this project is to complete necessary planning documents prior to
implementation of forest treatments to improve resilience. SSI will be leading the development of a
forest management plan that addresses the mixed needs of the community, including fire resilience,
drought resilience, and maintaining a healthy and ecologically robust forest community. Additional
partners include the Nevada Irrigation District and City of Nevada City. We are excited to support YWI’s
important forest health work in our community, and look forward to sharing updates on forest health
surveys in the area as they are completed.
