Anna Shampain, River Scientist AmeriCorps Member
Anna seems her happiest when she’s out in the field. When she comes back from surveying, collecting water quality data or some other fun field activity, she is always glowing. She is full of passion for the natural world and we love having her on our team as an AmeriCorps member. We hope that after reading all about what she’s up to, you might want to join her out in the field!
How long have you been working at Sierra Streams, and how did you end up here? I started at Sierra Streams this past October. I am an AmeriCorps member and came to Sierra Streams as part of the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership, which places members with environmental groups throughout the Sierra Nevada.
Projects you’re working on right now that you’re most excited about: Right now, I am working on planning our spring and summer monitoring activities including bird, amphibian, turtle, and freshwater fish surveys. I am so excited to spend time in the field carrying out that monitoring work.
What is the most rewarding part of your work? The most rewarding moments for me are when I get to go to a new site where we have ongoing work or are planning work. I have had the privilege of visiting some really stunning locations.
Favorite fieldwork activity: I love amphibian monitoring. It is so exciting to see a frog splash into the water or find a tadpole or egg mass. I also really love restoration plantings, they are so satisfying and really connect you to the project site.
Favorite vegetable: I think is it a tie between a cabbage and a sweet potato and they are pretty tasty together.
What do you do when you’re not working? When I am not at Sierra Streams I am probably climbing, practicing yoga or cooking. With the changing season, I hope to be able to get out hiking and backpacking during as much of my free time as possible!
Anything else you’d like people to know? Nothing else from me!
